Cristina

Cristina

Upon dropping out of Harvard, Cristina began working as a writer for The Village Voice where she met her future husband Michael Zilkha. Zilkha happened to be a wealthy heir and was just beginning his record label ZE Records with friend Michel Esteban. Michel convinced Cristina to record a single, "Disco Clone", which wound up with an underground following.    Soon enough she was on her way to recording her debut album simply titled Cristina which was produced by August Darnell of Kid Creole & The Coconuts fame. The album had several cover songs on it, one of which being Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" which led to a lawsuit because some of the lyrics were changed. This controversy led to her album being withheld and unavailable for a long time until it became reissued in 2004 as Doll in the Box.    In 1984 she released her follow-up album Sleep It Off with the help of producer Don Was (Was (Not Was)) but unfortunately the album was not commercially sucessful. The disappointement and cries of nepotism led to her early retirement in Texas. By 1990 Cristina and Zilkha divorced and she moved back to New York. Currently she writes for various publications and is suffering from MS.
